Nope.
Inspired by Jack Baty's list, this is a page of things I won't do. These are generally moral decisions and probably related to technology more than not. There will of course be way more "nope"'s than I will include on here, but I'll try and come back and note any ones I deem worthy of highlighting.
I've also added a /yep page, which as you can probably guess is essentially the opposite of this one.
In no particular order:
Will I...
- ...accept tracking cookies? Nope, in fact I'll go out of my way to untick and decline and opt out of all of them
- ...provide my date of birth? Nope, I'll probably put 1970-01-01
- ...give my real name to a website? Nope, unless legally required.
- ...allow your marketing dept to contact me for any reason whatsoever? Nope, I default-deny anything I haven't asked for out of principle
- ...connect with your professional account on social media? Nope, I don't even use social media
- ...grant your app access to my contacts/storage/etc? Nope, I probably won't even install it
- ...leave bluetooth and location on? Nope, for privacy and battery life. My battery is old! It can't handle all these CPU cycles!
- ...pay to remove ads? Nope, I'll go through a lot of trouble and strife just to block them
- ...Link my Google account? Nope, whether for SSO/auth or other reasons, if I can register a separate account not attached to any other, I will
- ...buy your software? Nope, I'll avoid it and use an open source alternative if possible (unless it's a video game...)
- ...plug that IoT device into the network? Nope, it getting harder to do this as required household stuff gets "smart" (boilers, freezers, electricity meters, etc) but I'll suffer a perceived inconvinience in exchange for my data to not be sent everywhere if I can
- ...buy that smart speaker? Nope, I hate that my TV remote has a mic in it. Even though I've disabled everything on the TV I'm convinced it still listens... *removes tinfoil*
- ...give time, attention and brain space to clickbait, negative and fearmongering news sources? Nope - you may say that this is irresponsible, that ignorance is no solution. And I agree. Something needs to change. But I don't know what or how to do that, and I don't have the capacity. Ignorance is bliss.
